breeding bearded dragonAre you thinking about breeding bearded dragon, well you are at the right place because I have the process that you need to follow in order to make it happen?  They are some amazing lizards to have as pets and it is very rewarding for you and your children to add new additions to their family.  There are some steps that you will have to take, to make sure that the breeding process takes place.

Creating the optimal conditions for Breeding Bearded Dragon

The first step in breeding bearded dragon is to make sure that they are healthy and at the proper age to start breeding.  They are often referred to as Pre-Conditioning Steps or Brumation.  This is the process of creating a winter season for them.  In their natural habitat, the winter season for them means that it is time to start breeding and they know that their food source will be limited.  You will have to create a winter season for them.

Photo-period – Step One to breeding Bearded Dragon

In the photo-period, you must use a UVB light with a timer.  The timer must be set to create 10 hours of light and 14 hours of darkness.  During the winter months there is not an abundance of food, so you must reduce the amount of food that you give them.  The temperature inside the enclosure needs to be changed as well.  The basking side of the tank should be reduced to 78 degrees and the other side should be set at temperatures between 64-67 degrees.  This process should last for 6 weeks.  After the six weeks has ended, they can go back to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of night.  Increase their food and offer them foods that are higher in fat.

You want to start observing their behaviors one month after the photo-period has ended.  The male may show signs of aggression and the female’s behavior will change as well.  The female will sometimes wave her arms and bob their heads like they are being submissive.  You have to be prepared because if the female is pregnant she will need a place to lay her eggs.  You must create a spot for her.  Most people create a spot by mixing sand and dirt together.

Looking after the eggs – Step Two to Breeding Bearded Dragon

The female dragon will lay her eggs.  You should remove the eggs and place them a separate incubator.  The temperature should be kept at a constant temperature of 85 degrees.  You will also have to make sure that the eggs stay moist.  A neat trick is to spray the eggs with water so that it keeps moisture.  Within the next 24 hours or soon ager, you will have baby bearded dragons.

Once the eggs hatch, they will need to be moved into another tank.  They will remain in this tank for four months and should be feed up to three times a day.  Hatchlings will require a lot of food because they are constantly hungry.  If they are not feed properly, they tend to chew on their tails and toes.  They will not grow back so feeding them properly and on a regular basis is very important.  After the four month period is up, you can go to feeding them one time a day.
